Volunteer with NFI
NFI offers volunteer opportunities for both individuals and groups both on and off-site at our urban farm site in NE DC.
The work is general organic farm maintenance, including digging, weeding, sifting compost, planting and more.
Our Urban Grower volunteer hours are back! Join us by getting your hands dirty and learn how to grow vegetables in the city! No experience necessary.
- Saturdays 9:00 am – 1:00 pm
- Wednesdays 5:00 pm – dark
Please let us know you are coming by completing our volunteer form. You can also send us an email to: email@example.com. Bring a water bottle and wear clothes you expect to get dirty. Closed-toed shoes are also expected.
We are excited to grow with you!
Directions to the garden:
Map of NFI Garden. To get to the garden from the Fort Totten metro station, turn left (north) and walk up the sidewalk past where the buses stop. Across from the parking lot and after some trees, you’ll see a paved path going up over a slight hill on your left (going north), take that path across a field and you’ll see us at the top of the hill! Closest address: 100 Gallatin ST NE
Each year NFI donates over 2,000 pounds of fresh produce to an area non-profit. This year NFI will be donating all of the food grown at our urban volunteer garden to Thrive DC.
Thrive DC is at the heart of a new start for anyone experiencing food insecurity, housing instability and/or economic crisis. They offer hope and the first steps toward a life of independence and self-sufficiency. Our produce will be used to supplement their Fresh Food Emergency Pantry Program. The ability to provide nutritious food sources to some of the city’s most vulnerable community members is critical to Thrive DC’s mission of preventing and ending homelessness by helping people lead fulfilling and stable lives.
Looking for a fun, educational experience to bring your group together and learn about growing food in urban spaces? NFI is a great place for your group! Your experience can be tailored to your group’s needs and can include a tour, group activity, and time to get your hands dirty.
Financial contribution: If your group would like to join us on a non-volunteer day, we ask that you contribute a small donation. NFI is sustained through financial donations and volunteer time in order to keep programs and volunteer opportunities running. As such a small organization, your contribution can help others who cannot otherwise afford to contribute.
Our suggested donation for groups is $10/person. Please contact Kristin Brower firstname.lastname@example.org about any additional questions or concerns and to schedule your group.
